S. Martinho do Porto

A perfect beach along an astonishing bay, a blue sea soft of quite, a paradise for the children and for the nautical sports.

From the top of the Belvedere of Facho and Cruzeiro or the Chapel of Santo António, it is a pleasure to have a look at the bay coloured by the typical yellow fishing boats and by the silvered track of small boats.

The bay of S. Martinho do Porto is the last vestige of an ancient Golf that, until the XVIth century extended itself to Alfeizerão and that opens itself to the ocean through a barra, with around 250 yards large, between the hills of Santana, at south, and the Lighthouse, at north.

The town, founded by the monks of the Monastery of Alcobaça at the XIIIth century, goes down in the shape of an amphitheatre since the Chapel of Santo António to the Dock and the Beach and it has extended, each time more and more, through the Avenida Marginal to the dunes of Salir. Its ancient houses can be discovered climbing the walk D. Pedro V to the Belvedere of José Bento da Silva Square, or to the Main Church from the XVIIIth century.

Nowadays, the Square Vitorino Fróis, the pedestrian street Vasco da Gama and the Tourism Garden, along with the Avenida Marginal, are the cosmopolitan centre, due to its esplanades, stores, town pubs and restaurants practically all vocationed to the sea flavours: the sued lobster, stuffed crabs, bass, breams and grilled sole or grilled sardines.This magnificent view coloured by the typical fishing boats can be enjoyed from the belvedere of Facho or the Chapel of Santo António (St. Anthony). The bay of S. Martinho do Porto is the last vestige of an ancient Golf that, until the 16th century reached Alfeizerão. The monks of Alcobaça Monastery founded the town in the 13th century. It has the shape of an amphitheatre from the Chapel of Santo António down to piers and the beach. Its ancient houses can be discovered climbing the D. Pedro V alley up to José Bento da Silva Square, or to the Main Church (18th century). S. Martinho do Porto has many possible walking routes, esplanades, pubs and restaurants. Enjoy the local dishes, mainly of fish and shellfish (lobster, stuffed crabs, bass, breams, grilled sole or grilled sardines).
